Owner's Log
Spring 2011: Above are photos
from 2010 September's tear-down. We discovered LOTS of interesting
bits from this historic cabin in which we judge might have been
built in the late teens/early 1920's: i.e. old windows,
doorways and built-in shelves that had been boarded up after a
remodel at some point. We uncovered 5 different kinds of
wallpapers and wacky paint colors (see the aquamarine paint color
from the back bedroom, along with two flowered wallpapers, a faux woodgrain and a faux pink tile 1950's wallpaper which we uncovered
from behind the showerstall). Our favorite was this vintage
gold wallpaper (see photo above with Terry standing in the doorway
leading to the old bedrooms) that lined the living room - we think
it might have been from the 1940's?. We kept pieces and
framed it with some of the old windows which I'll be using as cabin
art in the newly remodeled cabin.
We uncovered two
layers of wallpaper and paneling in the living room and discovered
some grafitti on a board stating "Jay slept here July '57".
Fun. :)
Also in the
living room (behind where the sofa was placed for years - I had 2
duck prints above the sofa) we uncovered a boarded up hinged flap
out window in which the sill was just covered in chicken feathers.
We are wondering if it is possible that this cabin could have been a
coop when CWC was a chicken farm in the early 1920's?
We've
basically kept the floors (after leveling them, and adding on
another 14 feet to the east end which has added about 33% more
square footage) and outside wall structure. I've been arguing with
the menfolk over windows and we reached a compromise: 6 of the
windows are new (and exit code friendly) and 4 windows will be the
vintage 9-pane windows which they will re-use from the old cabin.
