How much do you know about the forests and lakes of Minnesota?

TRIVIA #1

What kind of critter left these tracks in the snow on the CWC basketball court?  (click on photo to zoom in)

ANSWER: Crow (how appropriate for the 1st question of this new northwoods trivia game, huh?  :)   "Wherever crows are, there's magic."  -Ted Andrews Animal Speak

TRIVIA #2

What kind of critter left these tracks in the snow between Cabins #2 and #3?  (click on photo to zoom in)

ANSWER: Gray Squirrel - this one was 'bounding' along.

Fun facts:  A gray squirrel can hide 25 nuts in a half an hour and can later find roughly 80 percent of the those it buried. Hunters will sometimes trick a gray squirrel into showing itself by clicking two quarters together, which makes a squirrel-like sound.  ---source MN DNR

TRIVIA #3

What THREE kinds of critters (not including the vehicle tracks) left these tracks in the snow behind Cabin #9 on the driveway at the resort?  (click on photo to zoom in)

HINT:  1 is shy, 1 is sly and 1 is wry

ANSWER: deer, fox and a cat (OK, so yah, the wry was a stretch, but it rhymed well.  And cats seem sarcastic and wry sometimes, don't they? :)  The cat tracks must be from a wild cat, as Carol Kitty stays in the shop all winter in the heated portion, so they ain't her tracks.  We've had bobcat tracks in the springtime loose sand in the driveway, but they are much bigger.)

TRIVIA #4

What kind of bird is this?  (Kim snapped its photo from her deck in September 2011 as it was migrating through the resort) (click on photo to zoom in)

HINT:  She is the only one of her species able to digest the wax in bayberries and wax myrtles.  (This enables her to migrate further north than others of her kind.)  In this photo she was picking insects off the spruce tree .

ANSWER: Yellow Rumped Warbler

So!  I was going to utilize the male bird (in photo on right) as next week's trivia 'trick' question (it's same species, different sex) but I found the coolest website on bird songs -- click here to hear the vocalizations of this little warbler: http://www.birdjam.com/birdsong.php?id=30  (they even have an ipod app if you're really interested!)   The photo on this website will give away next trivia question, so I'm moving the male warbler photo above next to it's mate.

We are traveling next week, so next triva in mid-February

TRIVIA #6

What kind of bird is this?  (Kim snapped its photo from her deck in September 2011 as it was migrating through the resort) (click on photo to zoom in)

ANSWER: to be announced February 13

TRIVIA #7

This little guy was wriggling around in some dirt we were moving from near brother Kris' house when we needed some black dirt to fill in around Cabin #6's deck after we were done remodeling it in spring 2011.  What kind of critter is this?  Bonus question:  What color does it turn during it's adolescent stage?  You'll be surprised!  (Big John saved it in a 5 gallon bucket for Kim to snap this photo before immediately letting it go) (click on photo to zoom in)

ANSWER: to be announced  February 20

TRIVIA #8:

Which American state has 90,000 miles of shoreline, more than California, Florida and Hawaii combined?

ANSWER: to be announced  February 27

TRIVIA #9

Brother Kris was being either brave or silly picking up this common snapping turtle in the CWC driveway.  They can be quick and ruthless when "protecting" themselves.  (It's a good way to lose a finger!)  As it was, I believe Kris got a nice stinky squirt of urine for his trouble in helping the turtle cross the road.  :)

Question:  How long is an average lifespan of a snapper?

A)  5 - 10 years

B) 15 - 25 years

C)  30 - 40 years

ANSWER: to be announced  March 5
